readouts along with continuous display of where you are in the octave. On the not-so-fast app, when it does settle down, you know it's within whatever the spec is supposed to be.Īnd on the app, because it's "computing" you get cents and Hz. That responsibility falls entirely on the user, so the strobe trades off potential accuracy for user error in interpreting the display. The speed is due to lack of latency introduced by processing to create a stable display. The analog strobe which has fantastic, instantaneous response, which is the reason I use the TT, is potentially pretty sloppy in terms of nailing anything remotely close to advertised spec when you use it for "quick tune". They both work, but they get the job done different ways.Īs previously mentioned it's a display issue relative to what you can do with the information displayed, which varies from task to task. The app I use, Cleartune, is nowhere near Turbo Tuner territory spec-wise, but it covers more than enough ground at a practical level for getting the guitar in tune. ![]() I find needle type tuners faster than strobes because of that so on my Axe-Fx 2 I mostly watch the needle type instead of the strobe.Ĭlick to expand.Depends what you mean by "territory". How the tuner smooths out any variance is also important in how easy it is to tune with them. ![]() The AP Tuner software lets you set how sensitive it is and it's annoying to tune with the most sensitive setting as small changes make the needle swing wildly. So for phone apps I don't think it's an issue of the phone mic being good enough but how well the app algorithm detects the pitch and how it represents it on screen.Īnother thing that varies is the sensitivity. I've been using the AP Tuner software on Windows for many years to set intonation because it displays to 0.1 cents in numeric form and in my experience it has been just as accurate as using the strobe tuner in my Axe-Fx 2. ![]() The problem with many needle tuners is that they don't have a display that can accurately represent very small fluctuations in tuning so being in tune on them can be anything from ± 3 cents on some of the less accurate units. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the main thing about strobe tuners is that the display on them is very accurate.
